November 4th

The Education Effectiveness Survey (a state wide survey for effective schooling) will be distributed soon for all families to take. The survey is confidential and can be turned in to Suzette or Megan

H1N1 is here and parents are encouraged to keep their children home for 48 hours after a fever.

October 7th
What went well for school start:

Registration and Orientation liked the smaller groups. Barnes & Noble Book Fair was fantastic. PTSA and the work they have been doing: ice cream, book fair, networking, Reflections. Parking has been good. Adding Maggie Doud as a new teacher. New families felt welcomed. New Carpet! SLP Training was helpful. HSA staff was quick with responses to parent inquiries.

What could have been better:

SLP Training was redundant on the training for the returning families; please just highlight what was new this year. Post a sample completed SLP for viewing.

Have SLP Advisors be more consistent on how subjects should be listed on a SLP. Standardize offsite and onsite for subject expectations.

Parent Suggestions:

For New families do a follow up phone call to see how they are adjusting to the school, allow mentor moms to do the calling.

Put a cork board in the family room for "A Share Board" to have colored cards for people to list "I have" "I need" "I want to know about"
One of our moms has volunteered to work on this board.

Use the Wings email system to contact parents a few days before PR’s are due each month.

Advertise the Birthday Wall: see Suzette for an apple to post your name

Post that our Volunteer Board is available for looking for volunteer jobs. Located on the wall next to Suzette's desk.

Shelves will be added to the Storage Room and the Studio will have items stored there with labels on the cupboards.
The Area Manager came and inspected and there are few items being considered for new storage and upgrades to the building.

Changing our School Name was proposed and Sally will be getting back to us on the process of how to change our school name.

Carpooling for WASL testing was suggested for 2010 WASL to help parents get their children here everyday.

October 16, 2008 Parent Open Forum Minutes

Positive things so far this year:
Class pickup and drop off by teachers in the gym before and after classes. Reaching out to new families and bonding. Teachers had a smooth start and are very pleased with how classes are progressing.

Safety Concerns:
Students in the parking lot, near the dumpsters, near the Sequoia classrooms, in the gym unattended. A letter will be sent to all parents regarding the safety guidelines at the school. The teachers will go over the guidelines in class. There will be a training offered for gym parents. Gym rules will be added to the HSA Orientation at the beginning of the school year.

School Pictures. Additional information regarding free ID cards, student pictures for yearbook and free group class photos will be added to the HSA Handbook.

Parking: Dave will open up the basketball court for extra parking on Wed & Thurs mornings to keep the parking from overflowing in the HSA area.

Possible change of day for Parent Advisory Meetings. We will poll the Wed morning families to see if they were hoping to attend meetings. We will then make a decision as whether to meet on Wed or Thurs mornings for the rest of the year.

Below are the minutes from the 2007-08 school year.

May 14th Minutes:

WaMoola Funds: What to purchase for the school was discussed. Putting the funds toward signage on Rucker was proposed and Naomi Cordell is going to look into the cost of a reader board and get back to Sally.
Equipment for our ball room was also proposed.

Signs for HSA on Rucker Ave. Sally said that they have looked into this in the past and it is very expensive and therefore we may want to start a fund towards a sign. Naomi Cordell is looking into some options.

Seattle Children's Theatre: Information on upcoming plays is posted outside the office and listed on Wings. The cost for the plays are significantly reduced and you can use them as part of your curriculum.

New Parent Mentor Program for fall 08. Noreen Warbus has offered to help organize a mentor program for the fall.

Yearbook: It will be going to press next week. We have only 12 pre sales so it is difficult to plan on how many to order. Pictures are being accepted until May 17th.

April 9 Meeting Minutes:

Painting the Kitchen Area: One of our moms graciously offered to paint the kitchen area. Sally reported that there are district restrictions on painting the walls in a school, however we can purchase canvas and hang paintings in the kitchen.
The dates and times were reported on the New & Interested Family Orientations April 25th & June 18th, and the Open House is June 5th at 6:30 p.m.
The Open House will open with the Drama and end with a gymnastics demonstration.

March 19 Meeting Minutes:

The Homeschool Alternative Student Handbook was reviewed by parents and suggestions made to improve the content of the handbook. Specifically, add a learning goals section to the Graduation Requirement section for K-8 grades.
Add a Mentor Program section for established families to help new families integrate into the school.
Clarify the Allocation section that Memberships are covered for the student to the YMCA, Science Center, Zoo, etc.
Note that a Dedicated Receipt is required to get reimbursed.
Payment should be received within 2 - 3 weeks, if not received please contact the office.
List approved providers of lessons and services in the handbook.

Give the allocation section to the HSA teachers for suggestions.
Sally announced:

HSA Garage Sale is scheduled for May 17th

Next Parent Meeting is scheduled for April 9th.

February 13 Meeting Minutes:

Sally Lancaster reported back on the to do list from January's meeting: The allocation date spending question of whether parents are allowed to purchase items ahead and then turn in the receipts after Sept 1st. Items must be purchased during the school year because the last year's budget would have been already spent and therefore finance cannot accept receipts from the prior school year.

Patty Pote's schedule was discussed as to ways she could help with the high population classes in the younger grades. Sally will be working with Patty when she returns from leave.

Fall class ideas were discussed: Gena Seaberg submitted an idea for a Writing Class. A semester long 3rd - 6th grade class covering Paragraph Skills, Letters, Personal Narrative, Descriptive Writing, Persuasive Writing, Steps in Process, Report Writing and Story Starters.

A relationship class idea was proposed by Suzette Attenilli by Les & Leslie Parrott.

A teen etiquette class was proposed after the success of the elementary class. Possibly the teens could host a dinner for the school teaching everyone what they learn.

A Speed Reading Class was suggested.

A K-1 Art Class.

Sally mentioned we are looking at adding a half time teacher for lower elementary next year to accommodate the growth in that area.

Megan will be looking into getting an Enchanted Learning account for Celeste to use for our school.

Sally announced that we will have a local photographer next school year to avoid some of the problems encountered this year. However, the pictures will run just a bit more in price.

Sally will be working with Patty to hold a WASL prep class for the month prior to WASL for 3 - 5th grades.

Celeste will be emailing parents the date for the clay handprint. This will be an opportunity for those who have not done a hand print before to participate.

Sally will be getting a copy of the new 4 traits of Writing to give to the parents. The Everett School District will be adopting this soon.

March Agenda items include: Review of the HSA handbook, calendar and orientation items.

January 16 Meeting Minutes:

There will be a one time workshop for Kindergarten and 1st grade students to create a handprint on a Friday during the Beginning Pottery class. Celeste and Susan will help with this during Patty’s absence.

We will be looking for a parent volunteer for the vision screening for next year for each class to help with the logistics of moving students to and from the screening. The expectations will be posted on Wings.

An idea of putting a link to a typing tutor arcade type game on wings was suggested. We will check with Celeste if there are any Everett School District typing programs for younger students.

Sally reported that there will be expanded bandwidth for the district server and upgrades for the computers will take place next year.

Amy Seyss will be analyzing the need for a Parachute class on Wednesday with the possibility of alternating with a PE class.

Gena Seaberg reported that the WaMoola for schools check coming soon possibly by the end of January.

If the Village Theatre, a new contract with HSA, continues for next year the process for any continuing contract is just one piece of paper and is easily extendable.

The question was raised about using allocation to buy curriculum ahead for next year so the parents don’t have to wait until September 1st to purchase. Sally will contact Jim and ask.

A question was raised as to whether the items could be ordered early and shipped COD and therefore paid for after September 1st.

Sally asked to Suzette to put together WASL prep materials that will be copied and distributed to all students taking the WASL.

SLP teachers will hand out copy of practice exam at SLP appointments.

The HSA Open House is scheduled for January 24th from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be a PTSA meeting the same day.

Contact Patty for Resource List to post on Wings

We will be looking to add more workshop type classes like the Young Ladies and Gentlemen for future SLP weeks. We will need a volunteer Workshop Coordinator to help with this.

We will look at the impact of the change in schedule for the 2nd semester to see if we need to move the Parent Advisory meeting day to another day. If we find that we have more people on another day to switch the day. Agenda items will be posted on Wings the day before the meeting with an open comment period for those not able to make the meeting.
